Our temple is a non-profit entity, sustained by the generosity of donations. Every penny received from donations and classes goes directly to rent and utilities at our center. The Ananda worldwide organization does not financially support individual centers. Each center is autonomous and relies on the support of its members for financial sustainability.

Dear Ananda friends,

Tithing is a principle that deeply challenges many of us.

Tithing, akin to prayer or meditation, represents a spiritual discipline—a regular offering of the first fruits of our labors to God. This letter is an invitation to review tithing, and your own monthly tithe to Ananda Thousand Oaks.

Taking this opportunity to revisit your commitment allows for a moment of introspection; check in with Master, as his guidance can offer valuable insights and clarity in aligning your intentions with the present moment.

Yogananda tells us: “The act of giving bestows many benefits. It reduces the attachment of the giver toward material objects; it develops the attitude of service; it expands the heart and fosters the sentiment of compassion for others.”

While the tradition of giving one-tenth of earnings prevails in the world, at Ananda we embrace the idea of giving any percentage –  1%, 2%, 10%, or any other. The idea is that contributing a percentage helps overcome resistance, aiding in transcending fears about money and the tendency to perceive it as security. Alternatively, you may choose a specific monthly donation that resonates with you.

The term “tithing” finds its origins in The Old Testament, signifying ‘one-tenth.’ The Bhagavad Gita also emphasizes giving according to one’s capacity as an act of duty. However you chose to do this, it will deepen your relationship with God and bring you the joy of knowing that you are helping to spread these teachings which have become the very core of your life.

Swamiji further emphasized: “What you give will be returned to you ten thousand fold.”

Yet its highest benefit leads to eternal prosperity at the Soul level —a prosperity that comes to us when we see money as a flow of energy that only increases with our willingness and love.

In the realm of Self-realization, we understand money as energy that must flow to prevent stagnation. As Yogananda famously remarked, “The greater the will, the greater the flow of energy. The greater the flow of energy, the greater the magnetism.”

Reflect on all you receive through Ananda. Feel the love-filled abundance of how God gives to us through this path: classes, spiritually uplifting conversations, community and supportive friendships, special events, our beautiful temple and altar, and meditations with like-minded souls.

I encourage you to meditate on this, seeking Master’s guidance, and to listen for His answer—a subtle whisper often heard in moments of deep reflection.

For Ananda Thousand Oaks to thrive in the long term, its value must resonate deeply within the hearts of the community, motivating individuals to give back. It is too common for individuals to receive much here – without necessarily giving anything back.

Please consider the value of this center in your life. Consider how this center supports Paramhansa Yogananda’s mission of disseminating these profound teachings.
