THE ART & SCIENCE OF RAJA YOGA

Based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda

Raja Yoga offers techniques for self-mastery in every aspect of life, from calming turbulent emotions to awakening deep compassion and love for others. Ultimately, it is a well-explored pathway, walked by countless yogis and mystics, to union with God.

Based on “The Art and Science of Raja Yoga” by Swami Kriyananda, as taught by Paramhansa Yogananda, it is the most comprehensive course on yoga and meditation offered today. It gives us the balanced and complete approach of raja yoga, also known as “royal union.”

Yoga is more than body postures.

Most people think of yoga as physical postures. But Yoga is far more. Raja Yoga is one of the seven schools of Indian philosophy and has been taught for millennia. It offers a scientific approach to the spiritual life, with techniques for stilling the mind and expanding our awareness of spiritual realities.

This 12-week series is open to anyone interested in deepening their spiritual journey. The teachings of Raja Yoga are compatible with the core teachings of all great world religions. Devoted members of many faiths are an active part of Ananda. No prior experience is required.

The course is organized around seven topics: Philosophy, Meditation, Postures, Breathing, Routines, Healing Principles and Techniques, and Diet. It also includes in-depth discussions of the paths of karma, bhakti, and gyana yoga. We will discuss the interdependence of these seemingly separate areas and how all of them, when correctly approached, further our spiritual progress. These teachings are truly universal and apply to everyone regardless of religious or spiritual affiliation and have the power to transform your life.

You Will Learn:

Philosophy:
Karma, chakras, Self-realization, kundalini, guru, attunement, astral worlds, reincarnation, the Yugas, astrology, devotion, and selfless service.

•Hatha/Asana:
Physical body postures as a preparation for deep meditation.

•Pranayama/Breathing:
Control the breath to harmonize, increase, and direct energy in the body. Learn how to reduce fatigue, depression, lack of mental clarity, and other stress-related illnesses through the practice of pranayama.

•Meditation:
Experience meditation as a powerful spiritual practice—a way to make God real in your life. Devotion, an understanding of our chakras, and the role of the guru are a part of that exploration. Also covered: affirmations, chanting, and visualization.

•Healing:
Learn yoga practices to help relieve many conditions, including chronic pain, insomnia, high blood pressure, nervous disorders, weight problems, digestion, heart ailments, and stress. Experience balance, harmony, and energy control.

Diet:
Learn how food affects consciousness, and what types of food benefit your health and your spiritual life.
